Sports News – NCAA basketball news: Roommate arrested in fatal stabbing of Middle Tennessee St. player; BYU’s Davies banned for having sex

BYU’s Davies banned for having sex

Middle Tennessee State guard Tina Stewart was stabbed to death at her apartment and her roommate, Shanterrica Madden, was charged with first-degree murder. Madden claims she acted in self-defense, as Stewart was allegedly beating her up, and used Stewart’s own knife in the stabbing.

If you wonder whether or not BYU strictly enforces its Mormon policies, wonder no more. Sophomore forward Brandon Davies, who was averaging 11.1 points and 6.2 rebounds for the Cougars this season, has been kicked off the basketball team. He admitted to having sexual relations with his girlfriend, which is a violation of the school’s honor code.

Ugh…Ok!? Isn’t this what we want our young kids doing? (One partner – Consensual Sex?) How many NCAA hoops players in America are guilty of this crime? LOL

NFL news: Bob Sanders to Chargers; Redskins sign O.J. Atogwe; Panthers sign Jeremy Shockey

As the NFL labor dispute rages on, some players still aren’t afraid of striking deals. Bob Sanders, a former Pro Bowler and Defensive Player of the Year, is poised to sign with the San Diego Chargers before the week is up. The Indianapolis Colts gave up on the safety after he played just nine games in the last three seasons because of injuries.

The Washington Redskins got their man in safety O.J. Atogwe yesterday, signing him to a five-year, $26-million deal. Released by the St. Louis Rams last month, Atogwe leads the NFL in forced turnovers since 2005 with 43.

Jeremy Shockey has a new team. The enigmatic tight end was released by the New Orleans Saints last month but will stay in the NFC South. He signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers yesterday. Shockey is a four-time Pro Bowler.

MLB news: Jason Castro tears ACL

The Houston Astros were ready to give Jason Castro his shot at their starting catcher job in 2011 but it wasn’t to be. Castro left Wednesday’s spring-training game against Detroit with what was originally thought to be a sprained knee. But an MRI revealed a torn ACL and meniscus. Castro will likely miss the entire season.

NHL news: Lecavalier, Morrison, Hemsky injured; CTE found in Bob Probert’s brain tissue

The injury bug bit the NHL hard over the last 24 hours. Vincent Lecavalier missed the Lightning’s game against Boston last night with a “mid-body” injury. He’s listed as day-to-day with no timetable for his return at the moment.

The Calgary Flames may have lost a key piece of their playoff puzzle in Wednesday’s loss to Chicago. Center Brendan Morrison, who has gelled nicely with Jarome Iginla since joining the top line, injured his left knee. He had an MRI on Thursday; the results haven’t been revealed yet.

Oft-injured but talented Oilers forward Ales Hemsky is back on the shelf. He took a big hit from Nashville’s John Blum on Tuesday and injured his shoulder. He’s expected to miss two or three weeks but it could be more depending on his MRI results.

Bob Probert is the first contemporary NHLer to be diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, the same degenerative brain disease round in more than 20 deceased NFL players. Following Probert’s death from heart failure, an examination revealed CTE in his brain tissue.
